Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – June 27, 2017

Really getting into production of the highboy project. The lumber selection is out of the way and I’m on to working on the cabriole legs, which is a first for me but I’ve been wanting to make a set of these legs for a long, long time.

Centerpiece Box by Kelly

My wife asked for a box to use as a centerpiece for our dining room table. I used box joints for the joinery. Wood is maple. Finished with wipe-on poly.

17′ Dining Table by Darin

I only do a couple of wood projects a year, but 2016 was my biggest project ever–a 17 feet 4 inch long black walnut dining room table for my grandmother. To beat it all I started this project on November 11, 2016 and was able to get it finished by Christmas Eve as a Christmas gift to my grandmother. Every weekend, our family has Sunday lunch at her house after church. We have a generally large family with usually up to 18 of us eating at her house every week. The only complaint she has ever had is that she always wanted a table big enough for us all to eat at. In late October, I happened to be in the barn loft at my grandmothers and found this large stack of lumber that my grandfather had milled himself over 50 years ago. My uncle says he remembers helping my grandfather clearing off some of the farmland and cutting down and rough milling this lumber themselves. After realizing the lumber was walnut, I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it–build my grandmother the table she always wanted. An even cooler thing about it, a table that was built with lumber cut and milled off of the land that my grandmother still lives on. After relocating the lumber to the shop and letting it set a couple of weeks, I started the process of milling the lumber. I ended up making the table an extension table with two six foot ends that spread apart to accept two large leafs. I did bread board ends and pegged them with walnut dowels. I made the table supports as well from the same lumber. After taking about three weeks off of work and constant working on this project, I was able to get it done and finished for our entire family to eat around it for our Christmas meal on Christmas Eve. Every since giving her this table, a week has not passed without her bringing the table up. She is absolutely loves it. Throughout the process, I learned several things through out the build process and after it was completed learned I should have done a couple of things differently, but overall it came out well.

Bedside Table by Seraphin

This is a bedside table, that I made over the last year. Made from white oak with only hand tools. The first piece of furniture I have made. Two base coats of linseed oil and a french polish with shellac.

Lounge Chair by Willem

The design is based on a chair from Biggs & Quaill, a small furniture company from London (http://www.biggsandquail.com/seating). I made my own version based on the pictures of their website.
I used ash from the local windmill sawmill, which I also used for previous projects and told you about before (http://www.bolwerksmolen.nl/).
The chair is put together using mortise and tenon joinery and drawbored. The finish is danish oil.
