Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – April 19, 2017

Max’s surgery went well and I finished up JR’s bed just in time for the Northern Woods Show.

Hickory Dining Trestle Table by Bryan

It is counter height, 6’ long and 40” across.

The entire piece is made from 8/4 Hickory. The top is 4 pieces pulled from 2 boards and grain matched as close as possible. There are some butterfly keys on the underside to prevent checking, but the wood was so stable I would be surprised if it was necessary.

The trestle base is put together with drawbore mortise and tenons, with walnut dowel. The two identical stretchers come through the trestle legs with through tenons and are held with walnut wedges. This allows for easy disassembly and moving in the future. (Not counting the ungodly heavy top).

Crib by Logan

Built for my first child (due in April), loosely based on the one you built. It’s walnut with brass dowels holding the tenons into the legs to allow for disassembly. Total number of 60 hand-cut mortise and tenon joints in this project. Only power tools I used were a table saw for ripping, a drill, and a router for the grooves in the legs for the panels to go into (but the router burned out while I was doing this so I had to finish the grooves by hand). Anyway it was a fun project and I’m glad I did it but I will probably never build a crib again.

Cradle by Jarl

I am a 30 year old software engineer, for Norway, with woodworking as a hobby. I wanted to share some pictures of my 2nd “big” woodworking project, where i mare a cradle for my first son.

This is made from figured birch that had been drying for 9 years, as a 15×15” beam, at a local sawmill. I got it sawn to planks and had to hand plane every part used for the cradle.

Most of the work is done with hand tools. (I have since restored an old jointer, and plan on buying a planer 😉 )

Baby Furniture by Brian

I made this crib, changing table and rocking horse for my first grandchild.  The crib is made with solid white oak and finished with liming wax and clear wax.  The changing table is the same but has two pieces of white oak veneer plywood.  The rocking horse is from the last pieces of black walnut my father had when he died.  It is finished with spar varnish.
