Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – Oct 15, 2018

The sideboard case is all assembled and done. Isn’t prefinishing great like that? Next up are the drawer fronts which I am working on fitting to their openings.

Red Cedar Bowl by Mark

I turned this red cedar bowl out of a blank gifted to me for Christmas. I mainly set out to do this as a test for my new worksharp 3000, and it passed with flying colors. I used Howard Butcher Block Conditioner as a finish after sanding to 600. I repeated the 600 grit and applied another coat of the finish then burnishing with its own shavings.

Finn Juhl Inspired Tambour Cabinet by Jaida

17 year old Jaida won 1st Place at International Student Convention this year. This is her Finn Juhl Inspired Tambour Cabinet. There are five hidden drawers in this project. She also made the chair when she was 15.

Here is a link to it on Facebook and how the hidden drawers work.

Pen Box by Dave

I made this pen box for my artist brother. It’s 11”long x6” wide x7” y’all. It’s made of hard maple with black walnut splines.

Guitar by Bill

My parents cut down a large silver maple that had been in their front yard for my entire childhood, and that of my three boys. My Dad planned to use it for firewood, and, if I hadn’t started watching your videos a few months earlier, I wouldn’t have given that a second thought. But, though I had never done it myself, I was fascinated by your videos of harvesting and milling lumber. So, I hired someone with a portable mill who was patient/indulging enough to use it to mill up some fairly short (4-5′) pieces of the tree, and I  took home a small pile of lumber and dried it in my back yard. All three of my sons are musicians, and my youngest is leaving for college in a few weeks, so around Christmas time, I decided that the first project would be to work with him to build a Les Paul style guitar using wood from the tree that once held his baby swing.
There was a lot of trial and error, but the project gave my son and me a lot of time together, and I think (hope) it gave him some good experience/appreciation for making something by hand. The body of the guitar is made from the silver maple, some of which was spalted, as you can see on the back. We used a laser cutter to engrave an image, taken from an old photograph, of the tree as a sapling on the back of the body, and to cut the control and truss rod covers, as well as the pick guard, from rosewood.
It has a rubbed finish of equal parts boiled linseed oil, glossy spar varnish and paint thinner.
