Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – May 17, 2016

This week was another great test of the log trailer.  I picked up a massive chunk of silver maple crotch.  Can’t wait to slab this thing up!

Sitting Bench by David

I am 18 years old and I am just starting out woodworking. This is my very first major build. I got the plans from Marc over at the wood whisperer. Marc and yourself as well as my dad have inspired me to start building.  It’s cherry. I am going to keep it indoors. Instead of using mortise and tenons(not at that skill level yet) like Marc I used pocket holes but didn’t use the rust resistant screws.

Arrow of Light Awards by Tony

Each year, I make the “Arrow of Light” awards for the Cub Scouts who are “crossing over” (graduating) into Boy Scouts. I rip all the 5/4 pieces with my Festool track saw (I’m table saw-less!), glue, then hand plane them to the same thickness with my grandfather’s Stanley #4.
I work with a local engraver to make the brass plates I designed. The arrows come from an arrow maker in Texas. He uses the correct feathers that Indians would’ve used here in this area of Maryland/Virginia.
I finish with my Festool router table which is perfect for creating so many decorative edges.

Beads of Courage Box by Donny

My local woodturners club, Lighthouse Woodturners, offered a great presidents challenge. It’s called a “bead box”. This box is given to a wonderful child dealing with one or many health issues. These children are given beads for each milestone they reach on the path to recovery.
I chose to make a box from walnut and cherry woods. While making this box, I was really touched just thinking of all the children suffering.

Curly Oak Coffee Table by Shawn

his curly red oak table resides in my man cave, in the basement. I wish I could have photographed it in natural light, the curl shows up so much better, but there is a shortage of that in northeast Ohio. I built this to display my Indian relic collection. The display bottom of the case is a drawer that slides forward on ball bearing glide hinges.

I applied a dark oak dye to the whole thing, and sanded almost all of it off in order to enhance the grain/curl. I then applied three coats of shellac to seal, and help fill the pores. For the top-coat, I used numerous coats of General finishes Arm-R-Seal, (sanding between each coat) until all the pores were filled.
The cast iron legs are from an old school desk used in one room school houses. The legs were adjustable in height so as the kids grew, the desk could grow with them. The wooden portion of the desk was destroyed, so i salvaged the legs for something more useful.
