Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – Mar 21, 2017

I made a good amount of progress on the bed by completing the joinery on the headboard but I still have some design decisions to make.  I also spent some time at the lathe turning a few bowls for the Habitat for Humanity’s Spring Gala.

Tool Crib: A woodworking primer for young folks

For generations, woodworking has been used as a creative outlet for children. Fortunately, many perfectly usable tools are still around today! There are fine examples sitting on shelves in flea markets, antique malls and second hand stores, just waiting to be discovered and put back to work! Written with the simplicity of a nursery rhyme, and with illustrations of common (vintage) examples, this book serves as an introduction to the basic set of traditional hand tools you might look for to get your little ones interested in this timeless craft. (workbench plans included!)

Cutting Board by Jake

I’m a 16 year old woodworker from Michigan, and this is a cutting board I made last year. It is made of a piece of crotch figure walnut, maple and padauk. Its around 16″ long, and 7″ wide. It has been one of my favorite cutting boards I’ve made so far

Hat and Coat Rack by James

It is made from Tap Hole Maple (clearly a Vermont thing where I live) and the boards have the original tap holes drilled for the taps.  The dark streaks are what happens when the sap runs through the tree.  I designed this piece to mount on the wall as a hat or coat rack using old Vermont taps.  I left some original holes empty and just used a few real taps in strategic locations.

Bar Stools by Sean

They were inspired from the bar stool that David Marks made on the first season of WoodWorks.  These are made with Cherry seats and Douglas Fir legs and stretchers with brass pins.  Both the top and underside of the seats were sculpted with the ArborTech TurboPlane and they were finished with a wipe on varnish and given a suntan to darken the cherry.

 Grandfather Clock by Gary

I used Klockit for the movement and went with beveled glass for the door and side pieces. It took 5 templates designed in Sketchup to make the front crown with all the curves. The height of the clock stands at a bit over 7′ to the top of the crown.
