Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – April 18, 2018

This week, I finished up waterfall table number 2 (the resin river) and got started finally on my new table saw outfeed table. The cabinet carcass is built and I used plywood for that. Been a while since I built a project from plywood…

Bench by Jeff

It’s 2” White Ash slab wood with a live edge.  Our Ash are dying in vast numbers in our area north of Milwaukee, WI due to EAB.   You can see the EAB (emerald ash borer) larva marks in the wood.  Finished with Minwax dark walnut and red mahogany stains blended.  5 coats of clear poly sealer (water base).  Legs are custom from a company in Denver, CO.  2” wide ¼ flat steel.  I cantered the legs to keep from rocking sideways.

Pizza Peel by Seamus

a pizza peele made for our outdoor oven as a gift for my dad.   It’s made mostly out of things that were left in the scrap bin at a local maker space that I do some woodworking at when I’m not in school.  The species are Walnut, Oak, Cedar, Pine and some stuff I couldn’t identify.   The first picture id after finishing, and the second is before 🙂

Processional Cross by Chris

I was commissioned to design and create a new processional cross for my church. I offered to do it as a donation. I designed it to complement the large iron cross that hangs above the sanctuary, but to stand as it’s own design. The vertical walnut spline has steel stock embedded within it for strength, allowing for a minimal transition piece. It extends into the post to give the traditional cross appearance within the iron cross design.

Jewelry Box by Seth

This is a jewelry box I made for my girlfriend for Christmas. It is constructed of mostly American Red Cedar heartwood. It has three drawers constructed out of Maple. The back panels are White Oak. I hand cut and etched all the glass and mirrors along with hand engraving the brass tag at the bottom. It has a light stain with a glossy polyurethane finish. This project is special for me in several ways. I learned most of my preliminary woodworking skills from my late Grandfather when I was small. I used to draw photos of what I wanted him to make and we would go out to his shop and build them. I was very young and really couldn’t use the power tools much, but I enjoyed watching and learning. All of the wood used to build this project was wood that my grandfather had processed off of our family farm. I do all my woodworking in his old wood shop and used all his tools. It was a special project to work on because I am now using the skills I learned from him and all the equipment he used when I was a young boy.
