Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – Oct 1, 2017

This week I got started on the upper case of the highboy by dovetailing the carcass and installing the drawer dividers. I also spent some time building a pair of apple presses.

Luthier’s Palm Plane by Steve

Here I have pictured my shop built Luthiers Plane, designed and built for my future attempt at making an arch-top guitar. Although this is a small project it was challenging design and build. It is finished with tung oil and wipe-on poly.

The project allowed me to do some metal working to make the knurled thumb screw and wedge/chip breaker. I also learned to harden, temper and form the tool steel blade.

The bottom is convex in order to carve the arched top and bottom of this type of guitar. Think of a violin or cello top.

A big and time-consuming  part of the build was designing and building these fixtures which I used along with my overarm pin router. I did this because of the tight tolerances needed for this to work the way it should and to make it easy to make another in the future.

Mallet and Kitchen Knives by Jorge

This is an wood mallet that i have made, for the head I use sucupira and for the handle beechwood, to finished i give four layers of tung oil. My greater difficulty was cut the sucupira, was cut with an hand saw and sanded with a belt sander.
I also made a few kitchen knifes, some images of the works done.

Bookshelf by Chris

Drawbored M&Ts, Tusked M&Ts, and Wedged M&Ts. It is made of Jarrah and white oak. Like you I love to cut my joinery by hand.

Maloof Rocker by Nathan

My name is Nathan Craik, I’m 17 and I’m soon to be a freshman attending Union College (In NY). I’ve been watching your videos for some time now and over time you’ve inspired me to get into the woodworking lifestyle. I live in California and over the past 4 years or so I have spent as much time as I could working on projects and creating a small shop of my own in my backyard. My most recent project was a Maloof inspired rocking chair which I made as my Senior project in school (the pictures are at the bottom).
