Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – May 2, 2017

Finally back outside using the sawmill again.  I’ve had the round that I cut off of the white oak log sitting on the mill for over a month waiting to be cut into cookies.  In the shop, I started working on the counter top for my parents’ laundry room.

Live Edge Pear Table by Steve

It’s quite simple about a metre wide and 400mm high. The top is made from a live edge board of steamed pear that I bought, epoxy to hold the bark stable then flattened and sanded smooth. It taught me a lot of lessons. Basically that it’s a bloody hard timber and kills sand paper, so I finally figured out that a scraper is a tool I needed. Boy once that’s sharpened what a really  useful bit of kit that is. I tried to finish it with oil and that ended badly so I cleaned it up and used a simple wax which came out really well. The frame is a mix of Ash and Oak some mortice and tennon joints and then a simple two part stretcher. I tried a simple chamfer on the edges of the frame and that made such a difference to the overall effect I was amazed. It’s actually the second set of legs I made. The first set are great all made in Ash but when the top went on them, it looked out of proportion so I am making another top to go on those that’s a bit more robust. Anyhow still learning lots and it was fun to make.

Retro Cabinet by Philipp

My mother wanted a new cupboard for our entrance area. She really likes retro-looking furniture so I decided to build this Cabinet. The outside walls are made out of melamine-layered birch plywood, the drawers are constructed out of solid oak, as well as the substructure. This project was the most time consuming build I have ever done, especially filming and cutting was very time consuming.

Chess Set by Tade

2 pieces – a chessboard + pieces and a storage box underneath. The Chessboard is made from paulownia for the light wood (A japanese renewable wood) and I’m not 100% sure what the dark wood is, as I picked it up second hand from a home renovation, but it’s very very dense, so I believe it might be ironbark.
The box underneath is made from Queensland maple for the sides with paulownia splines and the bottom/plinth is a leftover piece of desk made of Acacia.
The table it’s all sitting on is also mine – an end table with a concrete slab top coated in epoxy (intentionally left rough as we like the look) sitting on a pine base stained with Mahogany stain. It was a test project, but really pleased with how they both turned out 🙂

It’s also my first time working with metal although I had previously known how to weld.
